Odoo for the Swiss subsidiary of a foreign group

A Swiss subsidiary of a foreign group must answer to two logics that don't overlap. On one side, Swiss statutory accounts, kept under the rules of the Code of Obligations, filed locally, subject to Swiss VAT and, where applicable, to payroll and Swissdec. On the other, reporting to the group, which follows the parent company's chart of accounts, its currency, its closing calendar and its own consolidation requirements. These two requirements aren't simple variants of one another: they answer to different audiences, with different rules. An Odoo project that addresses only one of the two ends up, sooner or later, running into the other.

Geneva concentrates a significant number of regional headquarters and subsidiaries of foreign groups, alongside international organisations and trading companies. AX-Fiduciaire is both an accounting firm and an Odoo integrator: this dual role is precisely what this situation requires, where the technical configuration and Swiss accounting compliance must move forward together rather than being handled separately.

The dual constraint: Swiss statutory accounts and group reporting

Swiss statutory accounts meet precise legal obligations: kept in Swiss francs, compliant with the Code of Obligations framework, filed within the required deadlines, Swiss VAT declared to the Federal Tax Administration. These obligations aren't negotiable and don't depend on the group's practices.

Group reporting follows a different logic: it serves the parent company's consolidation, follows its closing calendar (which may differ from the Swiss financial year), its presentation currency and its own chart of accounts, often more aggregated than the detail required in Switzerland. The group expects figures consistent with those of its other subsidiaries, produced in a format it can absorb without additional manual reworking.

The usual friction point: an Odoo project run purely from a Swiss perspective produces flawless statutory accounts but group reporting that is painful to reconstruct every month. Conversely, a project run purely from the group's perspective aligns reporting well but leaves the Swiss accounts poorly structured for statutory filing or VAT. Correct configuration anticipates both from the design of the chart of accounts, not as an afterthought.

The Swiss chart of accounts and its correspondence with the group's chart

Common practice is to keep the accounts in Odoo on a chart of accounts structured for Switzerland — which the l10n_ch localisation installs automatically as soon as the company is declared Swiss — then establish a correspondence table between each Swiss account and the corresponding line in the group's chart of accounts. This mapping allows consistent group reporting to be produced without duplicating accounting entries or keeping two parallel sets of books.

The quality of this correspondence depends on the granularity chosen at the outset: a Swiss chart of accounts that is too aggregated complicates mapping to a more detailed group chart, and vice versa. This choice is made upstream of the project, with a clear view of both frameworks, not at the point of producing the first report.

Multi-currency and the reporting currency

Swiss statutory accounts are kept in Swiss francs. Odoo also records each document in its original currency and applies a conversion rate for posting in CHF. When the group's presentation currency isn't the Swiss franc (euro, dollar or other), a second level of conversion is added to produce reporting in the currency expected by the parent company.

The conversion method used (closing rate, period average rate, historical rate depending on the item) must be specified by the group: this isn't a parameter an integrator can set alone, it follows from the group's consolidation policy. Once this method is known, it is translated into the Odoo configuration in a way that is reproducible from one closing to the next.

Swiss VAT

Swiss VAT applies to the subsidiary's transactions according to the rules and rates in force (8.1% standard rate, 2.6% reduced rate, 3.8% special accommodation rate, since 1 January 2024). The l10n_ch module automatically configures the corresponding Swiss tax positions. This scope remains independent of group reporting: VAT is declared to the Swiss authorities under Swiss rules, regardless of the reporting format requested by the parent company. See our Swiss VAT page for details of rates and filing obligations.

Local payroll and Swissdec

Staff employed in Switzerland are subject to Swiss labour law and social insurance, regardless of the parent company's country. Payroll must therefore be processed locally, with data transmitted to the AVS/AC funds, the LPP institution, the LAA insurer and other relevant recipients via the ELM standard. Odoo is on the Swissdec register at the "swissdec certified basic" level, certificate no. 1203.25, for ELM 5.3 (verified on 22.09.2026). This function falls under Odoo Enterprise. For details of exactly what this certification covers, see our Odoo and Swissdec page, and for payroll management in general, payroll and HR.

Intragroup flows and their documentation

Group subsidiaries frequently exchange goods, services, financing or cost recharges with the parent company or other subsidiaries. These intragroup flows must be recorded traceably in Odoo: dedicated journals, related-party accounts identified separately from external third parties, supporting documents attached to each entry. This traceability facilitates both the elimination work involved in group consolidation and the justifications expected in the event of a tax audit on transfer pricing.

The substantive rules — what rate to apply to a recharge, how to document a transfer price, what documents to retain — are a matter for case-by-case tax review, separate from the Odoo configuration itself. This page sets no transfer pricing rule and cannot substitute for one.

Consolidation: what Odoo does, and what it doesn't

One point deserves to be stated plainly: Odoo is not a group consolidation tool. It handles a single company well, and can allow several companies to coexist in the same database with intercompany entries partly automated. But the elimination of intragroup transactions, consolidation adjustments, and the production of consolidated financial statements compliant with a standard such as IFRS or US GAAP are not native Odoo functions.

Two approaches are commonly seen. The first: the Swiss subsidiary keeps its full accounts in Odoo and periodically exports the necessary data (trial balance, general ledger, or a specific format requested) to the group's consolidation tool, which remains outside Odoo. The second: a third-party consolidation module is added to Odoo for groups with a simpler structure and a limited number of subsidiaries. The choice between these two approaches depends on the consolidation tool already in place at group level, not an isolated technical preference.

When the group imposes its own ERP

It sometimes happens that the parent company imposes a group ERP for all its subsidiaries (SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics or another system already deployed globally). In this case, Odoo isn't meant to replace this ERP, but can handle the Swiss subsidiary's operational and statutory accounting locally — with its l10n_ch localisation, its VAT, its payroll and Swissdec — and periodically export the reporting data expected to the group ERP. This approach avoids burdening a system not localised for Switzerland with the weight of a full Swiss configuration, while respecting the group's constraint on its central consolidation tool.

AX-Fiduciaire's role

AX-Fiduciaire, established at Boulevard Georges-Favon 26 in Geneva, works on this type of project with a dual competence: day-to-day keeping of Swiss statutory accounts (see accounting) and the technical configuration of Odoo as an integrator (see Odoo ERP). On a Swiss subsidiary of a foreign group, this dual competence avoids the most common pitfall: a configuration that is technically correct but accounting-wise unsuitable, or the reverse. The starting point is always a review of the group's requirements (chart of accounts, currency, calendar, consolidation scope) set against Swiss statutory obligations, before any configuration in Odoo.
